OBITUARY
On Monday, September 9th, 2024, Melva Mae Laffin, 91, of Wappingers Falls, NY passed peacefully at her home. Melva was born on September 14th, 1932, the daughter of the late Chester and Melva (Sutton) Foley. Melva is now reunited with the love of her life Morris V. Laffin, Jr. who predeceased her on April 23, 2011. Morris and Melva were high school sweethearts. Following a two-year enlistment in Europe (during the Korean war), Morris returned home and they were married on November 12, 1955 at St. Mary’s Church in Wappingers Falls, NY. Morris and Melva were lifelong partners as they both grew up in the Village of Wappingers and were graduates of Wappingers Central School, class of 1951. Melva was predeceased by her brother Leonard Foley of Millerton, NY, her sister-in-law Mary (Betty) McDonald and her brother-in-law Peter McDonald both of Wappingers Falls, NY. Also, her sister-in-law Anne Laffin of Hyde Park, NY and her sister Joyces’ life partner Richard Miedema of Jersey City, NJ. Melva is survived by her sister Joyce Foley of Wappingers Falls, NY (previously of Jersey City, NJ), her brother Roger Foley and her sister-in-law Devon of Highland NY, her sister-in-law Carol Foley of Millerton, NY. Also, her brother-in-law Richard Laffin of Hyde Park, NY and brother-in-law Gerald Laffin and sister-in-law Rosanne of Delray Beach, Fl. Melva is survived by her son, Michael Laffin and his wife Betty Jean of Hopewell Junction, NY. Melva’s pride and joy were her four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and the families that grew around her. She loved them with all her heart and spent countless amounts of time with all of them over the years. Her grandchildren are Brett Laffin, his wife Teresa and great- granddaughter Aubrie of Hyde Park, NY. Jason Laffin, his wife Kristen and great-grandchildren Olivia and Collin of Croton-on-Hudson, NY., Brandon Laffin and Fiancées Amanda Fouss of Charlotte, NC and Michael Laffin and his wife Amanda of Norwalk, Ct. Her life was made full by her attendance at their sporting, dancing and life events they participated in. The joy it brought Melva to be included in their lives was immeasurable. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families whom she loved and was proud of all their accomplishments. Melva enjoyed her work career with the Town of Wappinger especially working many years in the Supervisor’s office. She made many friends and was always a devoted employee where she put the needs of the community above all else. Melva enjoyed watching various sports played by her grandchildren and always was their biggest fan. Melva’s favorite sports to watch were football (NY Giants) and baseball (NY Yankees). Going back to her youth, Melva was a member of the Wappingers High School cheerleading squad. Melva was a kind, caring person. She had a heart of gold and as family and friends, we were blessed that she was a part of our lives. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. Equally important, she was one of the best friends anyone could ever have. Proof of her friendship was that on occasion, she would enjoy a “happy hour” with her neighbors Lou and Barbara Clausen. Melva, along with Morris, spent many nights with their friends Frank “Al” and Joan Olivetto creating memories that lasted a lifetime. She also attended many local concerts and events with her friend and neighbor Nadine Ziegler. Melva’s family wishes to extend our deepest gratitude to her “Angels on Earth” who selflessly provided care to Melva and continue to assist her sister Joyce at home.
