OBITUARY

Peter Schinella Jr. – Beekman, NY: Peter Schinella passed away peacefully at home on June 14, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was 77 years old. Peter was born in the Bronx, NY on September 1, 1945, to the late Peter and Julia (Dorothy) Schinella.


Peter married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Vetter, on September 11, 1965. Shortly after, Peter was drafted and served in the US Army where he worked his way to the rank of Platoon Sergeant. During his time in the Army, he was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. While stationed in Germany in 1967, his first son Peter Schinella III was born. His wife and son joined him abroad shortly after Peter’s arrival. In 1968, upon his exit from the military, Peter worked for IBM for 30+ years, holding many different positions.


During his life, Peter served his community in many ways. He was a volunteer firefighter with S.W. Johnson Engine Company #2 for over 55 years, he worked part-time for the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, he was a trustee and police officer for the Village of Wappingers Falls, and subsequently, he was appointed Village Justice.


In 1970, Peter and Nancy welcomed their second son, Kevin Schinella. Peter enjoyed coaching little league baseball for his son’s teams. Peter was very involved in his son’s lives; he was always present at sporting events, school activities, and various life accomplishments.


Peter and Nancy, along with their boys, loved to camp. They traveled throughout the US in their RV, making memories along the way.


Peter was an avid golfer. After he retired from IBM, he moved from the Village of Wappingers Falls to The Villages, Florida. He worked and managed a few different golf courses before his return home to New York, where he spent his last few years.


Peter is survived by his loving wife, Nancy. His son Peter Schinella III and wife, Margot. His son Kevin Schinella and wife, Beth. His brother Michael, and wife Sandy. He has many adored grandchildren; Dawn Ripo and husband, Matthew; Rialee Schinella; Chase Houghtaling; Chase Schinella; Joseph Schinella; Colton Schinella; Sara Gumaer; and Donnie Prusakowski. Peter was very proud of his grandchildren, encouraging and supporting them in any way possible.


Peter was a great husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed by everyone who has ever known him.

Calling hours will be Monday, June 19th from 7-9 pm, Tuesday, June 20th from 2-4 pm, and again from 6-9 pm. A Catholic Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 21st at 10 am at St. Columba Church located on Route 82 in Hopewell Junction, NY.
