Tarna Maria Burgos

1949 - 2023

OBITUARY

Tarna Maria Burgos was born on May 11, 1949 in Manhattan, New York to the late Bessie & Antonio Burgos. Tarna was raised in New York City, starting out in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, later across to Brooklyn in Williamsburg and Coney Island, then eventually up to Hollis, Queens. In adulthood, Tarna lived and raised her family in various locations, starting out in Queens then discovering both the Capital District and Hudson Valley in upstate New York, in addition to a short time in Hollywood, California.


Throughout her work career, Tarna has held various positions but most notably was her devotion to youth education. As a childhood literacy advocate, Tarna has done much to pursue that mission. Some of these included the operation of a successful daycare with an early start reading program, earning of a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, being a teacher’s assistant to children with reading challenges, and volunteer reading for underprivileged youth.


Just like much of her family, Tarna thrived and flourished in the arts, spanning from poems and other literary works, to drawings, paintings, and photography. Tarna also loved to spend time in the kitchen cooking her special & often secret recipes which could never be matched. Tarna had a special love and bond with New York City, specifically midtown Manhattan and Coney Island. One of Tarna’s favorite hobbies was spending the day walking through Manhattan and frequenting her favorite parks and eateries. But most of all, Tarna loved spending time and keeping up with her family, especially all of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren for whom she often would cook those special recipes.


Tarna was preceded in death by parents Bessie & Antonio Burgos, sister Candida Moore, significant others Howard Henley and Brian O’Reilly, Laura Walker (G.G.), and “Auntie” Julia Lozano (June 29). Tarna departed this life on June 28, 2023. Tarna’s memory will forever be honored and cherished by her sons; Mingo, Dexter, and Brian, grandchildren; Lakina, Desiree’, Knikell, Elise, Mingo ll, Azia, Dexter ll, & Paul-Mark, great grandchildren; Ayden, Bryson, Brandon, Kendrick, Zaccai, Aaliyah, Nova, & Max, brothers; David & Tony, niece and nephews; Nefertiti, Simon, Rahsaan, and Yeuseff in addition to so many other family & loved ones.
